“A Flor de Piel”

Review by: Sammy Gelerman

In the Harvard museum in Harvard square, A Flor de Piel is thousands of treated, preserved, and hand sewn rose petals.  The artist, Doris Salcedo composed this as an offering to a Colombian nurse who was kidnapped and then tortured until her death. This reddish-brown skin of roses looks like a large, softly textured blanket. It is presented laying on a smooth grey floor with plain white walls. The blanket of roses lays ruffled and looks drapery on the floor. This symbolic piece of art looks like a pool of blood from afar, and its rusty coloring draws in more than meets the eye. Overall this beautiful piece of art is creative and the meaning behind it is heart warming.
