Ghosts of Chicago

review by Jack Duggan

I have never been truly moved by art until I saw this piece. Doris Salcedo created a deeply moving sculpture in Disremembered.  Disremembered is a sculpture that was inspired by Chicago gun violence.   The piece is very simple, a large open room, with what looked like several pieces of cloth hung on the wall.  However, it is not just cloth, it is silk thread woven with nickel plated steal.  This makes the image of a ghostly figure looming on the wall. The fact that there is only a couple of them in the whole room, gives the piece an even more eerie feeling.  The piece can be interpreted in different ways, but personally it represents those men and women lost to gun violence.  Men and women once full of life, now reduced to simple ghostly sheets on a wall.  Even for those not usually moved by art, I strongly advise you to see this piece, it is very meaningful.
