Doris Salcedo: The Materiality of Mourning

A Flor de Piel

This piece is delicate, and when first approached, it looks like a plastic tablecloth decorated with aged leaves. However, with a little more observation, the viewer is able to see that this is a massive blanket of thousands of rose peddles that were hand sewn together. Doris Salcedo created this piece to recognize the death of a nurse who died in the Colombian War. The blanket is strewn across the floor in a crumpled manor, making parts of it mildly translucent. This effect gives the piece a soft, matte appearance that alludes to the image of actual skin.
