Mass Moca was once a factory that
has since been turned into a beautiful museum that still contains the main
structures that the factory had at the time, but many stunning exhibits have
been added throughout the buildings. Not only is the artwork in this museum unbelievable,
but the architecture of the buildings adds a lot of depth and character to the
museum as a whole.
One
absolutely incredible piece of artwork that was extremely captivating was Until by Nick Cave. This piece is a huge
chandelier in the shape of a cloud hanging from the ceiling, and on top of this
cloud is what seems to be a different world. The cloud part of this piece
contains small chandeliers and white crystals hanging upside-down to create a
fluffy looking cloud. The top of the cloud is filled with small to medium sized
statues of flowers, animals, and people. This piece is interactive in the way
that there are ladders you can climb at different points of the cloud to be
able to see the art on top of it. The contrast from white chandeliers on the
bottom of the cloud to cluster of flowers people and animals all over the top
of the cloud is enchanting.
Another astonishing exhibit in Mass
Moca are the wall drawings by Sol Lewitt. This exhibit contained many enormous
walls with abstract drawings on them. The most intriguing section of this
exhibit were light drawings of different assortments of lines in small boxes
throughout the walls. The amount of detail put into these drawings was
absolutely extraordinary, and it makes the audience wonder how long it could
have taken the artist to achieve this incredible art.
Along with
the numerous stunning pieces of art, the buildings themselves are just as
incredible due to the history of what those buildings were used for. Before
Mass Moca was a museum, it was a factory. Many parts of the building, such as
tunnels from building to building, and various beams have not been taken out of
the museum, which gives the buildings character. It also forces those who are
visiting the museum to think about what the building used to be used for.
Overall
this museum is definitely worth the visit due to the amazing artwork and the
history that the museum contains. There are many different stunning exhibits
that range from huge pieces that hang from the ceiling, to huge wall drawings
within the museum. Also, while you are walking from one exhibit to another, you
are given the chance to admire the fascinating architecture of the buildings.
