Harvard Museum
Engraved by John Martin in 1824, “Satan
Viewing The Ascent to Heaven” is now being displayed in the Harvard Art Museum.
Amongst the thousands pieces of art, this piece has something that will make
you linger longer and paralyzes your body momentarily. The piece is a dark
toned mezzotint depicting Satan standing on a dark grey mass of clouds and in
the background the clouds open up to a single source of light and there are
figures with wings walking towards the light. There is something about this
painting that leaves you in awe, whether it is the blinding light or how real
it looks. Looking at this piece, you are encouraged to use your imagination and
draw out the scene in your head.
